Childhood Emotional Neglect (link to assessment)
A while ago I was introduced to the work of Dr. Jonice Webb author of the books; “Running on Empty” and “Running on Empty No More.” These books are filled with many ah-ha moments for those who have read them. I was so moved by her work (that parallels much of inner child and 12 step recovery work) that I decided to take her therapist training courses. I am currently listed on her Providers List. https://drjonicewebb.com/
A brief thumbnail: Children who grew up in homes where basic needs were most definitely met, may have had parents who were not emotionally present or distracted by other situations in their own lives. This emotional unavailability causes a difficulty in recognizing the value in emotional expression, the fluency of utilizing emotions in daily life and a fear of being seen when emotions run high. Self soothing and emotional regulation skills are not solid and emotions are avoided for fear of repercussion.
The good news is that adults can learn how to recognize, verbalize, experience and move through the rainbow of emotional experiences now, even if the groundwork wasn’t set up in their growing up years.
Recently, Dr. Webb has given us permission to share her helpful guide and assessment to anyone who might be interested.
